Altus Tendo is Latin for “Reach Higher”, the Chief Petty Officer’s Academy motto that gives task direction to those attending. They are mere instructions with a variety of interpretations. It can be used to have someone reach higher for something on the top shelf or to reach within themselves to a higher place. I think what makes these simple yet profound words effective, is that it allows individuals to make their own choice as to how to fulfill said task. In which direction shall I “reach higher”? With one hand, I can focus externally and reach for the next pay grade or some material object. I could also choose to use the other hand, to focus internally and reach towards a higher consciousness. Both paths have lessons to be learned with significant tribulations and rewards. The Chief’s Academy has given me the confidence and the resources allowing me the ability to choose both hands, simultaneously reaching higher towards my professional and personal goals. A lot of what I learned came as a direct result of embracing the total body wellness philosophy. My immersion into this program allowed me the opportunity to strengthen and enhance my mind, body, & spirit.

The organizational curriculum gave me a better understanding of my role in the Coast Guard. Strategic Thinking/Strategic Planning and the Staff Ride courses showed me the “big picture” and taught me that everyone has a part to play. The smallest piece of the machine can hinder productivity if it was not doing its job properly. Once I recognized that there are many moving parts in the system as a whole, I recognized that people were the ones providing the motion. The Leadership, Communication, Diversity, Coaching and Counseling courses taught me how to interact effectively with a multitude of different people. These courses and the discussion of many topics amongst my peers was a great source for strengthening my mind. In addition to providing a mental education, Training Center Petaluma also has many amenities to take advantage of during ones stay; the gymnasium was one tool I used to strengthen my body.

Having a tool and knowing how to use it properly are two different things. The training staff showed me different work out routines, taught me wellness/nutrition, and challenged me in a presidential manner. The President’s Fitness Challenge forced me to stay active and try a multitude of different exercises. I was able to sharpen my technics in forms I am already accustomed to like running, swimming, and weight lifting. I also tried new forms of working out like spin class, Zumba, Fit Deck, and TRX to name a few. My physical assessment at the beginning of the course gave me a base level to grow from and showed me that there is room for improvement. I look forward to seeing my results of progress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle change. Another aspect of the academy that helped me was the geographic location of the base.

I explored the surrounding cities and was able to enjoy what they had to offer. TRACEN Petaluma is home to many different animals, animals that I don’t habitually interact with. I was able to tap into the energies and attributes of the local wild life to assist me with the challenges I would have to undertake. I honored the Turkey, whose wisdom of self-sacrifice for a higher purpose helped to ease my burden. The Raven’s wisdom gave me courage for self-reflection, rebirth without fear, and the ability to tear down what needs to be rebuilt. Another animal that assisted me during my stay was the Deer; its traits enhanced my ability to listen, and showed me the power of gratitude and giving. The animal wisdom shared with me as well as learning what inspired my peers has definitely strengthened my spirituality. I am very grateful for all that I have and all that I am. One of my philosophies for living a righteous lifestyle is gaining and giving, the positive energy I gained I will return back into the world.

The Chief Petty Officer Academy fulfilled in my opinion what it was designed to accomplish. To acknowledge my roles and responsibilities, learn new techniques in interacting positively with others, and gain the courage to spread wisdom. I will take these lessons to the fleet and my family to further enrich our lives. I will do my destiny justice by not ignoring the signs of change and embracing my future. I am not scared anymore because I am not alone on this journey; I have many shipmates. I know that no matter which way I choose to “reach higher” my hands will be met by my brothers and sisters to assist me.
