What Being “The Chief” means to me

Essay on making Chief Petty Officer — military milestone, family legacy, and his self-described 'spiritual destiny,' undated (Coast Guard-era).

Coast Guard era, undated 2 min

Making Chief Petty Officer means a few things to me in different ways. It is a military advancement, a personnel achievement, and my spiritual destiny. All of which show my accomplishments thru fortitude, they are pivotal steps in my journey and reminders of the voyage ahead. I have always walked the line of duality on my path for growth and enlightenment so it is no surprise that this promotion is deeper than just my collar device.

My military advancement to CPO is a great feat in itself. I am the only member of my family to have served this long and reached this rank. I am now part of an exclusive fraternity with years of tradition and am honored to be a part of it.

This is my greatest personal accomplishment and my military service is the longest thing I have ever done in my entire life. When I was an E-2 back in 1998 making E-7 seemed so out of reach and unattainable. I would have never thought that I was capable of achieving such a thing and now here I am representing for my family, my friends, my culture, my service.

I am proud of my indigenous roots and culture so making CHIEF is a prolific triumph towards my spiritual destiny. My quest to be a Shaman and example for my “tribe” is a long road that requires a great deal of experience. Experience gained thru trials and tribulations while maintaining a positive attitude and acknowledgement of the sacrifice. Understanding that my sacrifice for the greater good of my family and my people is necessary and that I am my family’s sacrifice; given to a system, a way of life away from them to come back and teach and enrich the next generation.

Being the CHIEF means that I will not let these offerings of blood and tears be in vain, I will not kick my feet up and relax because I have hit this milestone. I will recognize that I have reached this summit only to look upon the base of another mountain. I am rejuvenated and excited for the next leg knowing that I have brothers and sisters to assist me, as I am here for them.
